Hello, I've found that there are a couple of directories under the /usr/portage directory which can't run properly with the 'emerge' command (please bear with me as this is only my 4th day using Gentoo). The following directories report "Couldn't find match for <package>, aborting" upon executing the "emerge <dir>/<subdir>" command in /usr/portage: media-sound/alsa-tools media-libs/alsa-oss net-mail/teapop I've also noticed that in the documentation for "man emerge" it refers to "emerge --world update", which upon execution reports a problem "--world is an invalid option". The command "emerge world system" doesn't report any errors, but also doesn't do anything (I had expected it to install everything in the /usr/portage tree). It merely reports "Calculating dependencies: Done!" and exits. Also, the command "emerge system" reports "Couldn't find match for update, aborting!" Anyhow, I hope this all helps you sort out any problems you might be having with Gentoo Linux 1.0. From what I've seen in the last few days, I think I'm going to be using Gentoo for a long time to come! Thanks for your time! I hope this helps! -Oscar istolz@netspace.net.au
Hmm, the man pages need to be seriously updated then. Better to use emerge --help instead, for valid options.

Working on updating the man pages. I think a good first cut is simply making man emerge = emerge --help, without colour and with the helpful 'WARNING' with regards to shells and escaping slashes. Thoughts?
Assigning to me. I'm about halfway done with the emerge man page update.
how is this coming, phil?
The emerge man page update is completely done, as I'm sure you can see (with the exception of adding information on environment variables, which is a RFE). I have no idea where to start with the rest, since I've never used them and would need to dive into the technical details of how they work. Help from anyone who knows about them would be greatly appreciated.
what about the ebuild man page ? it still needs to updated (functions/variable references)

Anyone is more than welcome to help with the updates. Getting the information for the updates is definitely non-trivial--it took me a while to get the info for the 'emerge' man page. Any help is appreciated.
I don't have the time or ability necessary to work on this as it needs to be done. Taking it off of my plate--someone else who has the time needs to pick it up. I'll be happy to help them in any way I can if they need help on the man format, etc.
is this still valid? //ZhEN
