Comment 1 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-01-24 11:49:35 UTC
Hiya, could you please verify that gtkmm has been built with USE=acessibility, and that libview and libsexy were rebuilt afterwards? Finally please also check that your installed libview is version 0.6.1...

That'll help us determine if it's a known problem or not, and let us fix up the ebuild accordingly. If all of those are correct then we'll have to start doing some deeper investigation.
Comment 2 Alex Barker 2008-01-24 16:18:25 UTC
Yes gtkmm was recompiled with accessibility and libview and libsexy where then recompiled as well to get the program to load. The libview version that is installed is libview-0.6.1 -debug.

If i can pull any more information let me know.
Comment 3 Alex Barker 2008-01-24 16:26:40 UTC
I did notice something strange....

ldd /opt/vmware/workstation/lib/lib/libvmwareui.so.0/libvmwareui.so.0

claims it can not find libexpat.so.0, i tried linking it into the /usr/lib which fixed the missing lib but did not solve the issue.

Comment 4 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-01-24 16:48:14 UTC
Hmmm,

Well, I'll have a look around the vmtn and see if anyone else has encountered this. Also, could you please see if the same issue exists when using vmware-workstation-6.0.1? Hopefully we can still get to the bottom of this... 5:)
Comment 5 Alex Barker 2008-01-28 07:57:43 UTC
I am not going to be able to test the 6.0.1 as i do not have the binaries for that version... Not sure if they are available on vmwares site as I have not upgraded my 5.5 license yet. Kind of wanted to make sure it worked with Gentoo before getting my boss to shell out the cash. Anyway let me know if there is anything else i can try.
Comment 6 Oliver Schwabedissen 2008-03-14 19:07:26 UTC

Hi, same problem here. After upgrading kernel 2.6.23 to 2.6.24 today vmware-modules-1.0.0.15-r1 didn't compile anymore. So I tried to upgrade my vmware-workstation 5.5.5 to 6.0.2.

I compiled gtkmm with the accessibility use flag and recompiled libview and libsexy afterwards. libview is v0.6.1.

vmware-workstation crashes without any error message when trying to enter the serial number.

I'm currently downloading v6.0.1 and will try that version.

Comment 7 Oliver Schwabedissen 2008-03-14 19:42:45 UTC
Hi, it's me again. Tried vmware-workstation-6.0.1.55017, but the problem still exists. v6.0.1 crashes when selecting Help/Enter serial number.

Unfortunately this means I have to go back to kernel 2.6.23-r9 since I need vmware-workstation every day.

Hi Oliver, I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner, I've been moving house and jobs the past couple of weeks. Thanks very much for testing out workstation-6.0.1, that's very useful feedback. I also encountered this problem when setting up my new machine. Unfortunately I can't determine from the strace what's going wrong, and as you've seen, vmware offers no message about what's going wrong. Sadly that leaves me fairly unable to fix the problem. However, I can look into getting vmware-modules-1.0.0.15-r1 working with 2.6.24 (which appears to be bug 197636, which I'd thought was fixed, if not could you please add some comments to that bug, and I'll reopen it).

Given that entering a serial number is generally a one-off event, you could try running vmware from a terminal by:

VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="yes" vmware

That should run and allow you to access the serial number dialog. Once you've entered it, you can start vmware as normal, and hopefully will not encounter any problems. It's a nasty workaround, but it's what I used for my recent install.

Otherwise the best I can do is continue checking VMTN to try and find a solution, sorry... 5:(

Hi Mike,

3 hours isn't that bad for a reply ;-)

Sorry about the confusion, vmware-modules-1.0.0.15-r1 compiles fine with kernel 2.6.24 running. It was a fault on my side. I was using an overlay for vmware-modules to be able to include vmware-any-any-update115 which fixed a bug that was causing error messages in /var/log/messages.

The bug fix from 01/26/08 didn't increase the release number so I missed that patch. The standard vmware-modules-1.0.0.15-r1 compiled fine after I removed my overlay.

The problem with vmware-workstation 6.0.1/.2 remains, but I can still live with v5.5.5 for a while.

VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="yes" vmware Seems to work well for me as a work around/dirty hack. I still think the problem needs to be addressed however it will get me rolling for the time being.
Comment 11 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-03-18 19:13:01 UTC
You're quite right Alex, but at the moment I'm shooting in the dark as I've got no clues as to what's going wrong. Sadly, the same issue still occurs with 6.0.3, so I'm open for any solutions people would like me to try.

I have the unfortunate feeling it's just a crossed wire somewhere as vmware use all their own compiled binaries rather than system binaries to run, compiled with different versions of gcc, and requiring libraries no longer in portage (libexpat.0). All in all, it's a case of wait and see if something changes I'm afraid... 5:(
Comment 12 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-06 21:51:53 UTC
Just a bit of good news. This issue seems to have been cured! Unfortunately, it's cured in workstation-6.5 beta (which is now ready for testing by the brave in the overlay), so it doesn't look like there's ever going to be a cure for the current 6.0.x series...

Workaround also works for vmware-6.0.4.

Workaround does not work for me for vmware-workstation vmware-workstation-6.0.4.93057.

I can confirm the problem with "Enter Serial Number..." in 6.0.5 build-109488. Using the workaround (VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="yes") is successful.

Comment #15 seems to be about a different problem. FT_Select_Size is a FreeType call.
