Hi, we're currently testing out an update in the vmware overlay (you can use layman to install the overlay) that should solve compilation issues on kernels > 2.6.23. Could you please give that a go and see if it fixes your problems?
Comment 4 Mat 2007-11-05 16:02:33 UTC
(In reply to comment #3)
I tried getting it from the vmware overlay and got the same error. Here it is:

Thanks for carrying out the testing, unfortunately it means that support will have to wait until upstream get into action. Sadly we can't support vanilla -rc builds. I'll leave the bug open as a reminder though...

Patch for vmmon from update115

Also tried the overlay version (update115) which didn't work, then I found the unofficial 115a update at http://rtr.ca/ which, although intended for vmware6, works on the 1.0.0.15 modules and vmware 5.5.5 for me. Diffed the contents against update115 and got this quite simple patch.
Comment 7 Vlastimil Babka (Caster) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-01-08 09:37:24 UTC
Forgot to add, it works for me on 2.6.24_rc7
Comment 8 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-01-08 12:01:36 UTC
Thanks, a near identical patch is already testing in the overlay, but only in 1.0.0.17-r1, if it works out without problem, I'll backport it to the other ebuilds before deploying it to the main tree. 5:)

Ok, a fixed version of 1.0.0.15-r1 and a new (fixed) 1.0.0.17-r1 have been added to the main tree, these should be able to compile against 2.6.24. Please let me know if there are any problems, or if it works ok, so that I can mark this bug as fixed. Thanks... 5:)

After an emerge --sync at about 2am this morning (GMT) I emerged 1.0.0.15-r1 against gentoo-sources-2.6.24 and it failed as described above.
I then ran an emerge --sync at about 12:20 GMT, and repeated the 1.0.0.15-r1 emerge and it now compiles OK.

I am on arch ~x86 - so I think you can mark that one as working now.
Regards
Ian

emerge error on x86

I wasn't sure whether I should open a new bug on this, since it is x86 and not AMD64. It is the exact same error though.

I'm confused; I can see this bug right now on two AMD64 boxes with gentoo-sources

- 2.6.24-r8
- 2.6.25-r6

Any ideas why? Should I use the driver from the vmware overlay?
Comment 15 Christian Schmidt 2008-08-02 21:48:21 UTC
Add gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r7 to the list.

Interestingly, cd'ing into the /tmp/portage/.../work/vmmon-only or vmnet-only dir and typing "make KERNEL_DIR=/usr/src/linux" works. Any idea what would be different?
Comment 16 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-08-02 22:16:01 UTC
Christian, please provide the results from emerge --info if you'd like us to be able to help. You may very well be running into bug 223449 or something similar.
Comment 17 Christian Schmidt 2008-08-03 19:23:02 UTC
Wow, thanks.

It is *exactly* this bug, -mfpmath=sse in CFLAGS.

The message is the same as in comment #4 - my apologies for posting into the wrong bug.
