I have been having several very annoying problems with my main home computer, and I have asked on IRC many times to no avail, so I will state my case here where it will be more permanently available (to save myself from repeating myself). This is a ~x86 box, using 1.4 profile (/etc/gentoo-release says 1.4.2.8, not sure how much difference that makes). I've recompiled my entire system using the clags "-march=athlon-xp -O2" to see if that would solve the problem, but alas, it does not. I've gone through this process now 3 times to attempt to fix (emerge -e world), and nothing seems to help. I will list my problems in order of importance: 1) PAM stops working after a day or so of uptime. - As it says, I absolutely cannot login with my computer after a certain period of time being up. I can't login to my FTP, can't su, no SSH, no TTY. This problem first started occuring when I updated my glibc version a month ago, and syslog gives no errors when it starts happening. The only error I do get is, when trying to login, it waits 60 seconds and then stops saying "Timed out after 60 seconds" - Everything else works fine during this time, only way to fix seems to be to reboot. 2) Frozen-bubble segfaults on SDL_Init. - I start frozen bubble, and I never get any screen up or anything, it just dies instantly. Don't have problem with other SDL programs (such as tux racer) and other friends don't have any problems. 3) From my gnome2 panel, I do not have a way to add a "Notification Area" at all.. though I follow the same procedure on other friend's box and it is there. It simply is not on the list on mine. Is there some way I can get a "clean install" of Gentoo without completely formatting? There must be something not remerging here to make these problems so consistant. I appreciate any effort given to aide in my solving the problem. Thanks in advance, - Philip Walls (malverian)
so you upgraded from a 1.2 machine to a 1.4 ?
Yes, but the problems didn't start occuring then, the login problem happened after a more recent update of glibc, though so far using gentoo-sources, I haven't had the problem.. we'll see how things turn out. But the frozen-bubble problem, and the lack of panel applet in the "Add to panel" menu for Notification Area still both confuse me.
frozen bubble is a seperate issue ... see bug 14006
3) From my gnome2 panel, I do not have a way to add a "Notification Area" at all.. though I follow the same procedure on other friend's box and it is there. It simply is not on the list on mine. There is no "Notification Area" in Gnome 2.0 from official sources. RedHat 8 has one, and Gnome 2.2 prereleases do. Not Gnome 2.0 as in Gentoo Signing this away from Gnome team, since we can't help with the PAM issue.
1) Pam seems to have stopped having problems, maybe it was something with the Kernel I was using. 2) Frozen-bubble is a known other bug 3) I still don't understand why my friend is able to get a Notification Area and I am not. We are both using the same profile, and both have ~x86 KEYWORDS. If this is some fluke, then feel free to close this bug.
gnome-panel 2.1.2 appeared in portage for a short time I believe. There's even an entry in /usr/portage/gnome-base/gnome-panel/Changelog. Maybe your friend merged it then. I've got gnome-panel-2.0.9 on mine, but from the CVS, I noticed that gnome-panel-2.2.0 has just been committed today. For your reference, here is where the gnome-panel nofitication applet was introduced: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2002-November/msg00064.html
i thought this was _already_ closed. looks like its been re-opened in the bugs.gentoo.org transistion or am i just remembering incorectly.
*shakes head*
