Since i upgraded to GNOME 2.8, the same day it came out, using the metacity window border (minimizing and right clicking) have taken down xorg two times. The only errors reported in the logfile are (don't know if the first lines are relevant): SetGrabKeysState - disabled SetGrabKeysState - enabled SetGrabKeysState - disabled SetGrabKeysState - enabled SetGrabKeysState - disabled SetGrabKeysState - enabled *** If unresolved symbols were reported above, they might not *** be the reason for the server aborting. Worth mentioning too is that I am running ~x86 and the nvidia drivers.
are you using the composite extension?
Yes, I am using it. But I am not using utilities like xcompmgr or transset. Disabling it now and testing.
metacity doesn't work very well with the composite extension(it has its own composite stuf built in, so even without those other apps running you will have problems. There is a very good reason the composite extension is disabled by default in xorg, so you get to keep both pieces of this one.

Just to confirm, disabling the composite extension solved it. Thanks.
Same for me (reporter of Bug #68637), disabling composite extension solves it.
