For metacity-2.8.1, when I start nedit-5.4, metacity crashes with the following error message: Bug in window manager: Unexpected X error: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) serial 2426 error_code 8 request_code 66 minor_code 0) Name: menuBar Class: XmRowColumn XtGrabKeyboard failed. For this version of metacity, nedit is the only program that causes this behaviour. I think this started happening after I upgraded xorg-x11 from version xorg-x11-6.7.0-r2 to xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1. I don't recall upgrading metacity and I did not upgrade nedit. I tried upgrading to metacity-2.8.5 (currently ~x86 masked) and that gave the same behaviur for *every* decorated window (ie not the gnome pannels). The observed behaviour is that all window decorations are displayed in the wrong color (light blue in my case) and then metacity crashes and is restarted, only for the same thing to happen again. The only way to stop it is to shutdown the application displaying the decorated window (ie nedit or any window in the case of metacity 2.8.5) I'm not sure how to get metacity to produce a core file when it dies otherwise I'd add a gdb stack trace here. Is it ulimit or something? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. start nedit when using metacity-2.8.1 as the WM and xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1 2. 3. Actual Results: metacity terminates and is restarted only to terminate again. Expected Results: window decoration should display as normal and window manager should not terminate I'm running metacity-2.8.1 (metacity-2.8.5 has even worse behaviour), xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1 and nedit-5.4 Portage 2.0.51 (default-x86-2004.2, gcc-3.3.4, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1, 2.6.8.1 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.8.1 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r5 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r1 Binutils: sys-devel/binutils-2.14.90.0.8-r1 Headers: sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.8.1 Libtools: sys-devel/libtool-1.5.2-r5 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache distlocks sandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://www.mirror.ac.uk/sites/www.ibiblio.org/gentoo/ http://212.219.56.162/sites/www.ibiblio.org/gentoo/ http://194.83.57.2/sites/www.ibiblio.org/gentoo/ http://194.83.57.3/sites/www.ibiblio.org/gentoo/ http://194.83.57.7/sites/www.ibiblio.org/gentoo/ http://194.83.57.11/sites/www.ibiblio.org/gentoo/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="3dnow X alsa apache2 avi berkdb bitmap-fonts cdr crypt cups encode f77 foomaticdb gdbm gif gnome gnomedb gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 guile imlib java jpeg libg++ libgda libwww mad maildir mikmod mmx mozilla mpeg ncurses nls nptl oggvorbis opengl oss pam perl png postgres python quicktime readline sdl slang speex spell sse ssl svg tcpd tetex theora truetype x86 xml2 xprint xv xvid zlib"
you are using metacity with xorg composite enabled, that won't work reliable at this point & is strongly discouraged. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 67159 ***
