Description Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-06-03 14:08:17 UTC
From slashdot comments:

For example, where in the documentation does it mention starting /etc/init.d/famd at boot? (This will improve KDE's file monitoring responsiveness.)

Does a user know to chmod his RTC?

How to umask a vfat partition so that users can access it?

How to setup multiple sound cards?

How to set up your application sound server settings?

How to enable the kernel laptop mode?

How to setup power management runlevels?

Which kernel modules need to be added to modules.autoload?

How to make fonts appear cleanly and consistently?

starting /etc/init.d/famd at boot? (This will improve KDE's file monitoring
responsiveness.)
This is clearly stated in the ewarning when emerging fam. Also mentioned in the
Gnome config guide. It should probably be in the KDE config guide as well.

Does a user know to chmod his RTC?
I couldn't find any documentation on this in the docs collection. I do know that
some apps like mplayer will give you a warning about it if it is not chmod'ed.
Also found threads on the forum about this.

How to umask a vfat partition so that users can access it?
Couldn't find anything specific about this in the docs collection. It is
mentioned in the mount man page, covered by hundreds of forum threads and a very
in-depth article at gentoo-wiki.com (I know, the wiki is not an official part of
gentoo).

How to setup multiple sound cards?
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml

How to set up your application sound server settings?
For each individual sound producing application? The application documentation
should provide this info (almost all sound apps in linux cover settings for
ARTS, ESD, ALSA and OSS). The KDE and Gnome sound servers are well documented in
those projects docs. Adding a short section on setting up dmix as the DEFAULT
sound card to the ALSA guide might be nice though.

How to enable the kernel laptop mode?
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/power-management-guide.xml

How to setup power management runlevels?
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/power-management-guide.xml

Which kernel modules need to be added to modules.autoload?
packages that need this (like nvidia module) give an ewarning at compile time.
Also mentioned in:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7#doc_chap5

How to make fonts appear cleanly and consistently?
No specific guide exists in the docs collection. Several hundred threads exist
in the forum and great articles can be found at gentoo-wiki.com

fam stuff:

Assuming no major bugs crop up, gamin-0.1.7 will go stable on 19th november.

At this time, app-admin/gamin will become a use.defaults provider of USE=fam
app-admin/gamin will become the default provider of virtual/fam

At the end of gnome install, it talks about activating famd at boot time. This
should be removed as gamin will be the new default and doesn't need any daemon.
Mentions of fam should also be removed from GNOME config guide at this point.

This will take care of the first point.
Comment 3 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-05 05:29:58 UTC
Does a user know to chmod his RTC?

We don't need to do this anymore, udev makes it readable by default. However rtc
is fairly useless unless this command has been run previously:

echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq

(and this needs to be run on every bootup)

I can't see any particular document where this can fit in, so I'm going to
suggest we add it to the ALSA guide (the most general multimedia guide we have)
Comment 4 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-05 05:32:37 UTC
Before we do that we need to talk about enabling rtc in the kernel config, which
needs to be done in bug 94955

That bug will also take care of "Which kernel modules need to be added to
modules.autoload?"
Comment 5 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-05 05:53:51 UTC
How to umask a vfat partition so that users can access it?
will be taken care of in bug 111551

How to setup multiple sound cards?
will be taken care of in bug 111552

How to set up your application sound server settings?
I don't think we need to go into this one. dmix is now on by default and gnome
and kde both use gstreamer which "just works"

How to enable the kernel laptop mode?
How to setup power management runlevels?
Documented at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/power-management-guide.xml
Comment 6 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-05 06:03:42 UTC
How to make fonts appear cleanly and consistently?
will be taken care of in bug 111554
Comment 7 Jan Kundrát (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-12-19 04:46:40 UTC
changing depends from 111554 to 108642.
Comment 8 David Li 2006-04-13 11:49:49 UTC
From comment #3:
echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq

Why not add some lines to /etc/sysctl.conf like:

# Allow user to use rtc usefully
#dev.rtc.max-user-freq = 1024

And then mention /etc/sysctl.conf in the gentoo handbook like it should be anyways.
Comment 9 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-31 20:02:28 UTC
Nobody (including myself) seems to have time or interest for these topics anymore, so closing this bug... :(
