Description Steven Wilson 2005-03-09 06:05:00 UTC
Whenever I type an apostrophe in the webpage area of the window, firefox-1.0.1 activates the find bar as though I had hit Ctrl+F; however, further input goes to both the find bar and the dialog I was typing in until a match is found. This does not occur if the focus is on a Firefox text box such as the URL box or the search box.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Mozilla Firefox
2. Make sure that keyboard focus is on the web page area.
3. Type an apostrophe / single quote character (the one on the same key as the double quote on a QWERTY layout)

Actual Results:
Activated the Find bar in addition to inserting an apostrophe in the active text
input area (if any)

Expected Results:
Inserted an apostrophe into the active text input area (if any) without opening
the Find bar

I think this is not a bug: it's a feature: if you check the help, you'll find in keyboard shortcuts section:
' Find As You Type Link

I can't reproduce this at the moment, so it seems that something triggers a state in which the bug occurs; I haven't figured out what it is yet...
Comment 3 Ian Ellis 2005-03-09 22:10:31 UTC
It sometimes activates when typing in forms/the search bar/whatever. Usually restarting Firefox fixes the problem though. And yes, it is a feature, Firefox is just supposed to know better than to open the find bar when you're typing somewhere. The same happens with "/".

Not a bug.

> Not a bug.
It was a bug. It has been fixed upstream, though (not sure exactly when).
