RCS (Revision Control System) currently belongs to app-text category but it seems better to put into dev-util for me. CSSC, CVS and Subversion are all in dev-util.
yes, it should -- I bring this up myself every few months -- but I'm more tempted for a dev-revisioncontrol like category. Ciaran, let's settle on a name, shall we?
Hrm, names, names... {app,dev}-{{rcs,vcs},{ver{,sion},rev{,ision}}{ct{,r}l,control}}. I'd be inclined to go for app-, since end users use these things. Suffix-wise, rcs is most correct, vcs is slightly more obvious and the long names are more obvious still. I guess having a clear name won't be quite so bad when we get cat/metadata.xml... Longest name currently is 17 characters. app-versioncontrol is 18, app-revisioncontrol is 19, app-versionctrl is 15. Your call Seemant. I'll do the moves if you like, since I'm now intimately familiar with all of the bugs in epkgmove :)
go for it :)
Main apps: dev-util/subversion dev-util/cvs dev-util/darcs dev-util/larch dev-util/tla dev-util/cssc app-text/rcs Utilities: dev-util/colorcvs dev-util/cvs2cl dev-util/cvs2svn dev-util/cvsd dev-util/cvsgraph dev-util/cvsps dev-util/cvsq dev-util/cvsspam dev-util/cvsup dev-util/cvsweb dev-util/gcvs dev-util/jcvs dev-util/lincvs dev-util/mcvs dev-util/tkcvs dev-util/rapidsvn dev-util/esvn Any others?
Name suggestion: dev-revctrl or dev-srcctrl. If app- is more appropriate than use that... but seems like it should be kept in dev- to me...
Ok, that's several in favour of {app,dev}-revctrl now... Looks like we have a winner.
I'd say app-revctl over dev-revctl as they are NOT limited to being used for development - I know some folks store their /etc in CVS.
You forgot dev-util/svk
app-cm maybe ? Configuration management is often considered a superset of revision control which could be positive in that there might be other tools with a similar audience that could fit in. app-revision could be another suitable name that would lead a stray soul looking for help with handling revisions to the proper remedies. The argument against any dev- specific prefix is that these are general purpose applications which happen to have a use in software dev also.
ciaranm: did this just get lost along the way? Mind bringing it up on -dev? I see a lot more RCS apps in dev-util now.
Not much point me doing anything about it until there's some way of a) me doing commits and b) package moves being done sanely.
Reassign to cvs-utils, and I need to bring this up on the -dev ML.
