I open this bug for adding the following artwork as Gentoo Artwork. I confirm that this work is released as CC-BY-SA/4.0: https://github.com/GKernelCI/Gassets Reproducible: Always
As far as I can see and tell (from superficial analysis and as a non-lawyer): - The artwork is not technically derived from any official Gentoo artwork and does not include the name "Gentoo" so the author could basically pick any license they like - We know who the author is - The artwork is professional - The artwork has a unique style - The artwork is not offensive What I am concerned about is that the "G" can hardly be argued to not be a "C" as well (which seems at least in part intended) and that the graphic looks like pacman or a snake "sliding a corner" and that as a result, I would personally not be too happy if this logo would be used for Gentoo in general rather than GKernelCI in particular because it comes with all these side-effect associations. I'm not fully aware what the implications of "adding as Gentoo Artwork" are, I suppose.
Sorry I cannot understand if this is this a yes or no vote ? or if you are asking some modifications
I vote yes.
I vote no, because we really should get legal advice before. We also need a clear process of who may do what with which logo. see also: 777969 The question here is less about arts, but about legal usage of trademarks.
I vote yes as well for the very same reason as described in bug 777969. I agree with sping though that we should clarify the implications of "adding as Gentoo Artwork". My reading here is that we are not voting whether the above mentioned artwork should be recognized as an official logo. We are just voting whether the artwork in place should be recognized as Gentoo Artwork. Based on this, I don't see any reasons that should stop us from doing so. Recognizing some of the "Gentoo Artworks" as official logos might be another story. But I really think that's not what we are voting about here. In fact, I personally would love to see more Gentoo Artwork. But I think - as already stated in bug 777969 - for this to happen we definitely need to keep the process of adding artwork as "Gentoo Artwork" simple.
@arzano you are right, I'm just asking to recognize this logo as part of Gentoo Artwork. > In fact, I personally would love to see more Gentoo Artwork. Some for me. The goal of Gentoo artwork project is to have more Gentoo related artwork!
If I understand correctly, the purpose of the bug is to add the linked artwork to the Gentoo Artwork project page on the wiki: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Artwork/Artwork The indented purpose of the Artwork project is to provide the Gentoo community with useful art, whether it be logos for (internal or community driven) projects, desktop wallpaper, 'fan art' of Larry the Cow walking through his favorite pasture, or whatever: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Artwork#Getting_involved I've just re-read through the Gentoo name and logo usage guidelines and as far as I understand legally, only piece of "art" that may be off limits for adaptation without permission is the official Blender rendering of the Gentoo "G". This is due to being a registered trademark in the U.S. https://www.gentoo.org/inside-gentoo/foundation/name-logo-guidelines.html The purpose behind any kind of restriction (as stated in the guidelines) is to "place some light social pressure on those directly using the Gentoo trademark to make money." The GKernelCI logo is an entirely separate logo from the stylized Gentoo "G" which is part of the official trademark. There seems to be no good reason below to not add this asset to our collection for use by the community. No one is making money from this logo and it is not an adaptation of any of our existing artwork. In addition, the Gentoo name and logo usage guidelines includes a Service Identification section that details use of the Gentoo name is permitted if someone is hosting a service that runs Gentoo (in this case the GKernelCI service?): https://www.gentoo.org/inside-gentoo/foundation/name-logo-guidelines.html#service-identification Finally, unless the other Foundation trustees were to have a problem, which I'm sure Alice would know about, there would be no to initiate legal action. The Foundation trustees would be the ones capable of doing so... the guidelines also note that even using the official logo for such a thing may be permitted, since violation is subject to interpretation. Unless Alice is planning on running a for-profit corporation that makes boat loads of money from GKernelCI, I think there is no contest case. Book closed. :) I vote to "yes, please!" add the GKernelCI logo to the Artwork project page on the wiki and think it would be wonderful if more projects created fun logos.
Following the discussion on bug https://bugs.gentoo.org/778284 I vote yes as trustees Trustees are informed and are represented also trustees email address is added in CC, as from the FoundationArtworkApproval wiki page. Gentoo artwork project should help the inclusion of new Gentoo related artwork that follow the approval guide. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Artwork/FoundationArtworkApproval @maffblaster please look the discussion on bug https://bugs.gentoo.org/778284 concerning trademark The majority agreed on adding this work to the Gentoo artwork wiki
