Description José Pekkarinen 2020-10-13 03:50:16 UTC
Hi,

As reported a while ago in kde bug tracking through [1], I'm unable
since a few releases of kde plasma to write all characters expected
in my keyboard layout(FI). Originally I thought it was a kde bug, as
heading to the terminal in my system allows me to write the characters
there, which means the base system is properly configured, however,
doing it inside the plasma shell, or any other kde software doesn't.

Opening inside the plasma shell any gtk program, for instance seamonkey
and typing the characters does work, so there may be a difference in
the build I reproduce in gentoo, and the builds offered in other distros
that doesn't let use the complete keyboard layout.

Both similar installations based in debian, and ubuntu with kde neon,
seems to play well with the tildes(for ex. ~,é).

Thanks!

José.

Please try temporarily switching from libinput to evdev.

are you sure you are using plasma wayland? This seems to be the
change that you propose in my system, none of these pieces may be used:

# emerge -puND world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.20-r2 INPUT_DEVICES="evdev* -libinput*"
[ebuild N ] x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev-2.10.6

Are *you* using a Wayland session? This is new to me, I was under the impression we were talking X11. Only for the latter evdev would make sense ofc.

That explains much, yes, and I've been for long, just somewhere in 5.16 I
lost this capacity to write the characters and I see it possible in multiple
versions in between in my debian/ubuntu systems in the same laptop (I think
it's now in 5.18 for debian testing, 5.19.4 for ubuntu + neon). Nowadays
even 5.20 doesn't make it in gentoo, I just upgraded and tested from the
kde repo, no luck so far.

Comment 6 Andreas Sturmlechner gentoo-dev 2020-10-14 18:25:18 UTC
You failed to mention that both in the upstream bug as well as here. Please always disclose what session you are running with such bugs.

Here's where the evdev idea was coming from: bug 728448

And it leads me to believe that something is wrong with libinput, or how Qt is interfacing it.
Comment 7 José Pekkarinen 2020-10-14 18:38:34 UTC
Sorry that is my fault, I used wayland for that long now that I assumed
it was the default everybody's using nowadays. Indeed plasma started to
default to it somewhere in ~5.18, and gnome is long using wayland also.

Not in my universe, where did you read that? X11 is still the norm.

Anyway, libinput works fine for me in X11, but misbehaves under Wayland session. That's at least something to start with.

I knew there was a similar sounding bug somewhere.
