When you open the ebuild you can see:

SRC_URI="ftp://xmlsoft.org/${PN}/${PN}-${PV/_rc/-rc}.tar.gz
        https://dev.gentoo.org/~sam/distfiles/${CATEGORY}/${PN}/${P}-r1-patchset.tar.xz

and in src_unpack it looks for {PF}-patchset.tar.xz:

        unpack ${PF}-patchset.tar.xz

which causes:

>>> Unpacking libxml2-2.9.10.tar.gz to /var/tmp/portage/dev-libs/libxml2-2.9.10-r3/work
>>> Unpacking libxml2-2.9.10-r3-patchset.tar.xz to /var/tmp/portage/dev-libs/libxml2-2.9.10-r3/work
 * ERROR: dev-libs/libxml2-2.9.10-r3::gentoo failed (unpack phase):
 *   unpack: libxml2-2.9.10-r3-patchset.tar.xz does not exist
