The build should have failed with:

interface.c:1358:1: fatal error: opening dependency file .o/interface.d: Permission denied

or similar, because the build system by default creates a symlink from .o/ ==> /tmp//make/snownews:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 jer users 19 Sep 13 09:14 .o -> /tmp//make/snownews

Even before you get to the libtinfo underlinking problem that now blocks this bug, you should have seen the .o/ problem. Or does user root get around that through a special emerge configuration that disables sandbox features?
