Description Chris 2019-07-02 14:09:20 UTC
Hi.

I updated recently (probably a couple weeks ago), and ever since, Kdenlive stopped working properly. The version (which is still current in portage) is 18.12.3 has problems, that are already noted on bugs.kde.org: namely that it is produces output consisting of all black frames.

To get around this, I decided to go with the other version in the portage tree: 19.04.2. But this has a major problem as well... it adds several minutes of black frames to the end of the rendered video. In my example, a 10 second video had 16 minutes of black frames added to the rendered product. A 2 Minute video added 20 minutes of black frames.

The appimage from kde demonstrates that this has been resolved.

To produce the problems:

18.12.3:

1) Add a clip to the library
2) Place that clip on the timeline.
3) Click on that clip -- this crashes kdenlive.
4) Restart kdenlive
5) turn off GL in the Preferences
6) Restart kdenlive
7) Add a clip to the library
8) Drag that clip to the timeline
9) Render the file
10) View the file - you will see it is all black.

19.04.2:

1) Add a 10 second clip to the library
2) Drag it to the timeline
3) Render it - you will see it wants a crazy amount of time to render... for me, it was 45 minutes to one hour and 5 minutes. I tried render to webm, mp4 and mpg.
4) View the rendered product. The 10 second clip renders fine, but there is 16 minutes of black footage immediately following.

My system:

It sounds to me as if you do not have user rights to your GL driver.

I'm not sure what library you are talking about, but I added a clip to a new project, started playback, added effects back and forth, and no crash of kdenlive-19.04.2 at all.
Comment 2 Chris 2019-07-02 14:55:23 UTC
I most certainly do have access to the video card.

The library I'm referring to is the window in the upper left of the interface (by default) where all your imported clips reside. You can drag these clips onto the timeline for editing.

I never said that kde 19.04.2 crashed. I said it is adding several black frames to the end of the rendered clip.

But you said it about 18.12.3.
Comment 4 Chris 2019-07-02 19:11:34 UTC
That is correct.

You had stated: "... I added a clip to a new project, started playback, added effects back and forth, and no crash of kdenlive-19.04.2 at all."

So I was just clarifying that I never had a problem with 19.04.2 crashing.

However, it is worth mentioning at this point that, after adding the kde overlay and installing kdenlive-19.04.49.9999, the problems did abate. Similarly the latest appimage from kde does not have either of these problems.

So the bad news is that there are issues in the two versions in portage... but the good news is that the next release should fix them. Hopefully that will manifest in the next few days.
Comment 5 Andreas Sturmlechner gentoo-dev 2019-07-15 06:08:09 UTC
It's why you file one bug per issue.

19.04.3 is in gentoo ebuild repo.
