This is probably related to bug 609496, which has been wrongly resolved by dropping DirectFB support for qingy. Me (and others) commenting in bug 609496 can confirm the qingy with the enabled DirectFB support works as expected. The situation is worse now, because due to the portage cleanup, there are no older ebuilds of qingy with the DirectFB support, thus masking the new ebuilds is not enough. I had to create overlay. I opened this new bug asking for re-enabling of DirectFB support. That is quite unfortunate. With DirectFB Qingy is great. There isn't really any other application that fills the same gap. I came to argue against dropping DirectFB. I won't because I did check git first and I do get the point that development has stopped. I suppose this means that all graphical support outside of X such as in Links and Mplayer will be going away too? It's natural that we would have thought this was all about 609496. When one installs an update, finds that their Qingy has basically turned into Getty and so searches bugzilla for Qingy that's what comes up. Also, fixing 606194 is NOT a side effect of messing up Qingy. I don't know why the original poster on that one mentions Qingy at all. The problem is that DirectFB doesn't build with the egl flag on. That is true with or without Qingy. The insistence that neutering Qingy somehow fixes that bug seems to be a very disingenuous way to get us to give up DirectFB. It seems more like the kind of thing that RedHat would do than what I have come to expect from Gentoo.
It is not in our capability to maintain a huge framebuffer stack that is going against the flow of current graphical stack. So with there being no upstream, unknown about of unsolved security issues and existing bugs in the package with no-one taking care of them, the logical thing to do is to move on at some point. If you want to pick up DirectFB upstream work and maintain a package - great. Otherwise I'm not so sure what we can do here; I guess if someone would fix the bugs and fix the issues and (proxy-)maintain DirectFB, there's a case to be made to keeping it. I don't know what the existing projects are in this area, but these days something like this would be done on top of KMS/GBM. You can play hardware accelerated video on top of that (without X or wayland), and I believe also accelerated OpenGL over EGL GBM windowing system. I've also heard of SDL2 working on top of it for some games. Providing a graphical getty on top of that shouldn't be that hard, and maybe there exists something already in this space, but I haven't done any research on that. Or maybe Qingy could be made to work with that, if it doesn't yet (e.g. in their GIT master if that project is still alive..)
DirectFB is gone.
