The file manager (nautilus) starts automatically on login (GNOME Classic session). This behavior after upgrading from gnome-?. Also the case with a newly created user (new home dir). It doesn't occur with a normal GNOME session. Login with gdm. I will try with startx.
How do I get in a GNOME Classic session with startx?
I don't understand what do you mean by file manager starting automatically :/ Do you mean that a file browser window is opened by itself or similar?
I guess you are hitting the bug that this patch is supposed to fix :) https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/patch/?id=845e8dbe02a3609b3d7df41dd0df38f8bbad3682

Yes, a file browser window is open as soon as I log in. I have to hit Alt-F4 to close it. But I am getting used to working with a normal GNOME session...

Yeah, it happens because classic mode calls nautilus in that way, look at the bug description: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=741166
