Description logical.guy70 2013-04-03 16:51:17 UTC
Attempting to emerge vtk hangs forever at the same point while configuring before building.

Reproducible: always.

See https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-955876-highlight-.html for details.
Comment 1 Tom Wijsman (TomWij) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-04-03 18:27:51 UTC
Ironically, the forums are down. Regardless of that, it is more handy for the maintainers if this information is available from the bug report itself:

1) Please attach the complete build log.
2) Please comment with the output of `emerge --info =sci-libs/vtk-5.10.1`.

build log. Pressed Ctrl_C where it says 'caught signal 2'.

At this point, if I go to /var/tmp/portage/sci-libs/vtk-5.10.1/work/VTK5.10.1 and build as any normal package from source (mkdir build; cd build; cmake ../; make; sudo make install), it works fine and installs into /usr/local prefix.
Comment 5 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-04-04 06:13:28 UTC
mmh, I don't know what is wrong, but I will take a look into it. Could you please check whether you find any config.log equal file for cmake in that build dir?
Comment 6 Justin Bronder (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-04-04 18:42:28 UTC
Can you build without the sandbox?

If so, I suspect this is a dupe of #462602.

Posting the rest of your investigation from the forums would have helped isolate this.

CMakeError.log file in folder /var/tmp/portage/sci-libs/vtk-5.10.1/work/vtk-5.10.1_build/CMakeFiles/

This is the only interesting CMake generated file that I could find that vaguely resembles some kind of error log.

How do I build without the sandbox?
Comment 10 logical.guy70 2013-04-04 18:55:40 UTC
(Taken from my posting in the Gentoo forums, link given in 1st comment)

I also tried running it inside strace. I must admit I have no idea what was going on with all those system calls, but right at the end it seems to hang at some futex call (here are the last few lines of the output):

Yes, it now builds.

@sandbox - Only hangs inside of the sandbox. Is this potentially related to #462990?

doubtful. that bug was because the process was overriding symbols that sandbox was also overriding.

what process exactly is hanging here ? the `ps` output (which includes commandline) would be useful. also attach gdb via /proc/$PID/exe and do a backtrace.
