For some reason vboxpci.ko is not compiled on my system. I think the cause is the fact that I have a trimmed kernel which does not offer the required functionality(?). Simply removing every mentioned instance of this module in the ebuild 'works around' the issue. VirtualBox has been tested with Windows XP, including additions. No crashes and other issue's found. Reproducible: Always

This time I uploaded the correct versions, sorry! (*bangs head against wall*). Seems that portage somehow ignores failures during the compilation phase and happily tries to install *.ko files that are not there. Tested with 4.1.22 and 4.2.0, both fail the same way.
Just want to confirm I'm getting this identical error as well, with gentoo-sources-3.6.0. I haven't found a workaround for it yet. Looks like it's a compiler/kernel issue since it seems to be a kernel header, iommu.h.
Do you have hardened and a stripped down kernel as well??
No, but I am using gcc-4.6.3. Here's my emerge --info: Portage 2.2.0_alpha135 (default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop/kde, gcc-4.6.3, glibc-2.15-r2, 3.5.4-gentoo x86_64) ================================================================= I created a local ebuild and added this patch. Seems to work flawlessly: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/pre-release-beta/477173-kernel-3-6-rcx.html
Created attachment 326268 [details] Patch Patch in the Comment #15 doesn't work for me (epatch fails), so I decided to make the needed changes manually and create a patch with diff (diff -ur vboxpci.orig vboxpci > virtualbox-modules-4.1.22-err-ptr.patch). Now ebuild works.
Want to confirm that the patch in Comment #16 is working on amd64.
Updating to virtualbox-4.2.4-r1 fixed this issue for me.
*** Bug 448332 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
(In reply to comment #18) > Updating to virtualbox-4.2.4-r1 fixed this issue for me. Ran into this when upgrading from gentoo-sources 3.5.7 to 3.6.11 and was wondering whether we need a virtualbox-modules-4.1.22-r1, given that 4.1.22 is the only vbox version currently marked as stable.
Same here, after upgrading from gentoo-sources 3.5.7 to 3.6.11, virtualbox-modules-4.1.22 failed to build because of a warning that says that ERR_PTR() is undefined during compilation of include/linux/iommu.h (in the gentoo-sources folder). I fixed the problem by adding the following at line #25 to iommu.h: #include "err.h" Then i emerged virtualbox-modules again and that solved the problem.
The #include "err.h" solution helped me. This qualifies as a kernel bug, I think.
(In reply to comment #22) > The #include "err.h" solution helped me. This qualifies as a kernel bug, I > think. I don't think so. Linux kernel is currently cleaning and reorganizing it's headers. Splitting it in a kernel specific and userspace specific header (UAPI) tree structure. It's called 'header disintegration'. I think that the initial preparations broke virtualbox. Besides, kernel devs don't care about out of tree modules. Especially VirtualBox since it even marks your kernel as tainted by just loading it!?!?
Same problem with virtualbox-modules-4.1.22 (last stable version) and gentoo-sources-3.6.11. Virtualbox modules were instaled OK with previous stable kernel version.
(In reply to comment #22) > The #include "err.h" solution helped me. This qualifies as a kernel bug, I > think. +1 Works fine.
The same problem after upgrading to linux-3.6.11 and trying to rebuild virtualbox-modules-4.1.22 It was solved with help from Comment 21 (https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=433796#c21) By adding to /usr/src/linux/include/linux/iommu.h: #include "err.h"
Upstream patch proposal: https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/12/13/519 And for download: https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/1875541/
Patch also works well here Gentoo x86_64 Kernel 3.6.11 app-emulation/virtualbox-modules-4.1.22 gcc-Version 4.6.3
Same problem here, and solved applying the patch.
Looks like this is fixed in all recent kernels, please reopen if there are still any problems. See upstream commit here: https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/include/linux/iommu.h?id=9a08d3766874835f4eba1b3d66938326c069d817
