emerge --info

When X is started, the fglrx module is loaded but crashes about immediately. Oddly enough, the X server does start and seem to work properly, even when starting applications (like wine games). Even the graphics are fine.

As soon as the application is closed and another X application is started, the system locks up. Sometimes the Caps-Lock keyboard light blinks and the PC reboots soon afterwards, meaning some kind of kernel panic occurred.

I have trouble debugging, because this error occurs in a livecd environment and the (fullscreen) X server prevents me from reaching the console after the panic.

Just after X is started the following error message appears in dmesg:

fglrx_pci 0000:01:00.0: irq 47 for MSI/MSI-X

Please open a bug in the fglrx unofficial bugzilla http://wiki.cchtml.com , this really sounds like an fglrx bug and not a gentoo bug. Does it work with 12.3? If so this is definetly an fglrx bug.

Add the upstream bug link to the "see also" section of this bug. Thank you

Bug reported @ fglrx unofficial bugzilla.
I will soon try to narrow down the issue.
Comment 8 spamzooi1 2012-06-12 22:42:17 UTC
I also tried:
* gentoo-sources-3.2.12 with ati-drivers 12.2 --> does not compile
* gentoo-sources-3.2.1-r2 with ati-drivers-12.2
* gentoo-sources-3.0.17-r2 with ati-drivers-12.2

These versions cause the same errors in dmesg.

Maybe i'm a bit premature, but it doesn't seem there is a lot of activity on the unofficial fglrx bugzilla.

There is if AMD devs are intrested in your issue, otherwise it is not. Don't be surprised if they just ignore you. You might try to reproduce the issue with a supported distribution (so try ubuntu 12.04), and if you can still reproduce they might be more intrested.

To be honest your issue seems really strange, so it might be hardware related or config related. What hardware is that?
Comment 10 spamzooi1 2012-06-13 09:46:44 UTC
Ok, i will try to reproduce the issue on Ubuntu. Then i'll wait patiently for an AMD dev to respond.

My hardware:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400
6GB Kingston ValueRAM
Asus P5K/SE
ATI Radeon HD 4770

I happen to have a second PC with a different ATI card, i'll test my livedisk on that machine too and keep you posted.
Comment 11 Manuel Rüger (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2015-07-10 17:13:53 UTC
Closing this bug, as 12.4 is not available in tree anymore. Please reopen, if you can reproduce with a recent version.
