Description Alexander Bezrukov 2011-06-24 10:27:33 UTC
I am using xfce4 and x11-terms/terminal. After an upgrade I noticed that X process gradually increases its CPU usage. At some point CPU usage stabilizes, each time around a different value (typically around 50%). At this moment keyboard and mouse in X become barely responsive. Killing all Terminal's restore normal state of things, but also not immediately (it takes around quorter a minute for X to recover). By many experiments I reduced the problem to x11-libs/vte update from 0.26.2 to 0.28.1-r200. Reverting back 0.26.2 "solves" the problem.

xorg-server is compiled without xnest and xfvb support but I checked that these flags do not affect the problem manifestation.

What I have already done to no avail:
cd /usr/portage; for i in `echo x11-* xfce-*`; do j=`qlist -CI $i/`; if [ -n "$j" ]; then emerge -1 $j; fi; done; cd -

I would be happy to provide additional information.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Ensure that your system is up to date.
2. Run Terminal (I do this in xfce4 with xfwm4).
3. Type something in the Terminal, wait half a minute or so.
4. Check CPU usage of X process.
Actual Results:
CPU usage is around 30%-90%, keyboard and mouse are barely responsive (delay is like you're typing over a very slow network link).

Expected Results:
System is responsive, CPU usage is nearly zero when idle.

I have this problem too, but it occurs only under Xfce, not GNOME. It has arisen since the upgrade to vte a day or so ago.

If you want my emerge --info I can provide it, but in simplest terms the system is an all-stable x86 box.

Same problem here. I use x11-terms/terminal and xfce.
