net-im/pidgin now requires net-libs/farsight2, which in turn requires media-libs/gstreamer (eh?) which requires dev-libs/check... which doesn't build on IRIX (Bug 268002) :(

Surely, some of these dependencies can be made optional, or at least made to rely on USE flags so that they can be easily bypassed?

Indeed, media-libs/gstreamer has dev-libs/check and "--enable-check" hard-coded... can't this be made a USE flag or rolled into USE="test"?

that leaves gstreamer+check which someone else can figure out if it's actually optional before bugging the gstreamer maintainers

Actually, since gst 0.10.25, there is an internal copy of libcheck.. So I removed the dep
