Description Leonid Kopylov 2010-02-06 17:40:40 UTC
When i boot with latest InstallCD "install-amd64-minimal-20100121.iso",
a keyboard stops responding at "Keyboard map selection". Keyboard is "Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000"

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
It happens every time i boot with this CD

With Fedora 12 LiveCD keyboard works fine.
I thing maybe some usb-related feature is missing in InstallCD's kernel?

Yep, same thing happens for me with a Logitech Cordless Desktop. I think the keyboard works from the Live CD on Slackware 13 because it has Device Drivers->HID Devices->Generic HID support and USB Human Interface Device Support built-in. A workaround is to use a live CD from another distro (like Slackware) to install Gentoo. This is a really easy fix, I'm not sure why it's taking so long for them to get around to it.

Have the same MS NEK4 USB keyboard and have the same described problem with the Gentoo Install CD's for the past year or so.

A better description, the keyboard works during hardware booting and up until the boot: prompt of the install cd. But then keyboard keys fail after kernel initialization, and of course with the added effect of not being able to choose a keyboard mapping when prompted.

After further reproduction using my default flawless installed Gentoo O/S, the latest SystemRescueCD dated 2010-10-11, and the Gentoo Install CD snapshot dated 2010-10-16... I find the latest SystemRescueCD now works fine and is using kernel-2.6.34 or 2.6.35. (I think prior SystemRescueCD releases also displayed similar keyboard problems.)

The missing statements within dmesg/syslog during USB keyboard detection mapping to device file seem to be missing during boot of the Gentoo Install CD's. You should see something like "...input, hidraw2..." somewhere right after the initial USB keyboard detection. To help find these messages, find the USB port number numbers you have your keyboard connect to (for me "usb 2-2") and search dmesg/syslog for this port's USB logging.

This really seems like a kernel bug as the kernel had similar ups and downs for the past year with other drivers/modules loading, but might also be within the additional s/w packages.

A good method to find if this is the kernel, is to create a Gentoo Install CD with a 2.6.34/35 kernel -- I do find it funny, I've never seen this bug on my 2.6.* kernels on my default Gentoo O/S installs here -- could this be related to Bug #309187... Bug #270983 definitely seems like a duplicate of this one.

Another possible duplicate is Bug #251014 opened in 2008 -- can easily find these duplicates using an advanced search and searching InstallCD keyboard bugs.

I'm closing this as a dupe.
