Description John D Maunder 2009-08-21 23:35:07 UTC
ati-drivers emerges ok. When startx systems hang with black screen. System is still reachable by ssh. Have tried various xorg.conf;
1) created with Xorg -configure and then aticonfig --initial
2) blank with aticonfig --initial

x11-base/xorg-server-1.5.3-r7

Currently using X drivers with no xorg.conf which works fine but would like to use ati-drivers.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. startx
2.
3.

Actual Results:
black screen

Expected Results:
startx should start desktop manager(xfce in this case)

Comment 4 John D Maunder 2009-08-29 07:30:42 UTC
Changed kernel to 2.6.27-gentoo-r8 and ati-drivers-9.8 works. So assume there is a problem with later kernels.

Unsure whether this is a fix!

Comment 5 Rémi Cardona (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-08-29 07:39:31 UTC
Definitely not a fix. I'm not sure how AMD handles bug reports, but this is something they should know about.

Thanks

Xorg.0.log

I don't really see much that is relevant but don't take my word for it.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

X doesn't work on my computer without it. (Well it doesn't either way now...)
Comment 8 Simon Hunt 2009-09-02 23:18:28 UTC
I can confirm this bug except switching to gentoo-sources 2.6.27-r8 didn't fix it, now I just get a black screen with a small non-flashing cursor in the upper-left corner. Is there anything else you did? My video card is a Radeon HD 2400 XT. I will attach my Xorg log and xorg.conf. Here is emerge --info:

Nevermind, I did `eselect opengl set 1` for ati and that did fix it, thanks Lukas! Even with the .30 kernel.
Comment 10 John D Maunder 2009-09-15 17:41:53 UTC
Updated to ati-drivers-9.9 and system works as expected. No problems with X or dektop now.
