Description ScytheMan 2009-08-16 12:29:05 UTC
The last set of packages was dated from 2008-11-09.
As you can see here [1], most of the packages are out of date (don't exist in portage tree anymore) and might have vulnerabilities.

It will also make some users happy to see a version of gnutls included [2] and get the revdep-rebuild problem [3] fixed.

If there is any opportunity to provide help as an average user without knowledge in writing ebuilds etc., please tell me what I can do to improve the situation on emul-linux packages.

Thanks in advance!

Out of date version of emul-linux-x86-xlibs makes running 32-bit binaries on some video cards quite troublesome. See for example bug #290153. On my hardware (Radeon Xpress 200M) 32-bit programs using OpenGL make X-server lock so hard, that even kill -9 via ssh does not help and the machine needs to be rebooted.

I'm willing to help with testing and development of new emul-linux-* libs, just tell me where should I start. Thanks in advance.

I would also be interested in testing changes. Is anyone on the AMD64 team working on this right now?

Additionally, for reasons pertaining to bug #252220, it would be nice if these new emul-linux-x86 packages could include the nss libraries, maybe as a new emul-linux-x86-nss package; it's not much use having a 32-bit xulrunner-bin if many things depending on that also require a 32-bit nss (and possibly nspr, but I'm not certain anything actually requires that, since they're blocked by the 32-bit nss requirement).

I was surprised there actually *is* a set of updated emul-linux-x86-libs in portage, but they are masked. Everything works fine so far after installing them. Could they possibly be unmasked sometimes?

Fixed with app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-*-20091226

Could the http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/emul/content.xml page be modified to describe what's in the new packages? I don't think it's been updated since 2007...
Comment 9 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2009-12-27 13:21:40 UTC
It's covered in http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=266835 , I will try to look at it but, at first, I need to familiarize more with docs updating

That still only covers up to the 20081109 release...what's in the new one released yesterday?

Don't worry, I already have a new page prepared for new packages, but still need to find time for commiting it safely without breaking anything (I am new here and still don't have much experience ;-))
