After xorg-server 1.5.3 was stabilized and I upgraded to it as part of normal procedure (emerge -uvDaN world && emerge --depclean), font-cursor-misc was removed as part of the depclean. The end result was that since I had another font which also defined the basic X cursor, I suddendly got a weird cursor instead of the default one. Suggesting that font-cursor-misc is added back to the basic dependencies of xorg-server. (Also lots of basic utils were gone, like xdpyinfo, but I guess this is also intentional).
x11-base/xorg-x11 does depend on media-fonts/font-cursor-misc...
(In reply to comment #1) > x11-base/xorg-x11 does depend on media-fonts/font-cursor-misc... > 7.4 does, but 7.2 apparently does not. Do note that when xorg-server 1.5.3 was stabilized, the stable xorg-x11 remained at 7.2.
Same issue, the X server no longer needs those fonts itself (the previous versions did really need the fonts). As for the xorg-x11 meta, it will be stabilized later on. If you have any issues with specific applications failing due to the missing font, please open bugs against those. Thanks *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 265397 ***
