Description Dan Ost 2009-04-08 03:34:14 UTC
A friend of mine wrote this summary of his experience:

After upgrading from xorg-server-1.3 to 1.5.3-r5 (as it has gone stable
this week), my xterm fonts were too small and could not be resized (via
<ctrl>-right click).

I would get errors such as "Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset"
and "Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion"

As it turns out, an 'emerge --depclean' removed
media-fonts/font-misc-misc. On at least two of my systems this is a
requirement for xterm, xclock, xfontsel to work properly.

It looks like font-misc-misc was listed in the DEPEND part of the
xorg-server ebuild up 1.5.2.

I don't know if 1.5.3 is supposed to supply these fonts internally or if
the dependancies are incomplete in 1.5.3.

Also, media/fonts/font-cursor-misc was removed in this upgrade but I
have not found it affecting anything yet.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge xorg-server 1.5.3
2. emerge --depclean
3. notice that font-misc-misc is removed and xterm, xclock, etc complain on startup.

A "ditto" from me. I spent an entire week of time I didn't really have trying to track this down, going all over the map debugging (this upgrade had come at the same time as a kernel upgrade and a nvidia upgrade).

Not only did it break xterm and cripple aterm, it rendered useless the "Tabbed" feature of xmonad (which needs the fixed font). The Gentoo Xorg 1.5 upgrade doc mentioned that there's an included "fixed" font, but doesn't say what library includes it, and how to determine that function is working.

mrxvt will refuse to work until you reinstall font-misc-misc

Then please file bugs for _those_ apps. Those apps _should_ be able to cope with just the "fixed" font (which is provided by libXfont and used directly by the X server).

Any app which fails/segfaults due to missing fonts is a _dumb_ app which either needs to be fixed or removed from portage. But please _do_ file bugs for those apps, we need to do something about those.

But as for the original topic of the bug report, xorg-server no longer needs font-misc-misc and it will not be readded.

Thanks
