Description Fab 2008-12-24 07:38:26 UTC

I've updated world recently by running emerge -uDN world, and git was updated to During stripping phase, it produce lot of messages like following :

i686-pc-linux-gnu-objcopy: /var/tmp/portage/dev-util/git- Invalid operation

This seems to happen only with git, I checked the logs of others emerged packages.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:

$ emerge --info

Reassigning to maintainer.
Comment 4 Fernando J. Pereda (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-12-25 01:32:03 UTC
I think this is a portage 'feature'. Not being aware of hardlinks.

Comment 5 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2009-01-03 15:30:18 UTC
yes, hardlinks are not handled well, but this is poorly handled in general and why we prefer softlinks in packages

dev-portage: any suggestions other than converting to symlinks?

ensure hardlink files are only processed once when necessary

If this patch is saved as /tmp/prepstrip_hardlinks.patch, then it can be applied as follows:

  patch /usr/lib/portage/bin/prepstrip /tmp/prepstrip_hardlinks.patch

Patch applied and =git- reemerged, everything is fine, thanks.
Comment 9 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2009-01-12 20:08:32 UTC
Thanks for testing. This is fixed in and 2.2_rc21.
