'Networking->Network options->Unix domain sockets' (CONFIG_UNIX) must be enabled for udev to work. 'Networking->Network options->Packet socket' (CONFIG_PACKET) needs enabling for dhcpcd to work. These are both disabled by default in gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r4, and neither is mentioned in the handbook, so stage 3 installers will be wondering why it didn't work. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Follow online handbook for stage 3 install. 2. Boot and watch udev crap out. 3. Fix udev with a recompile, install dhcpcd and watch it crap out on boot instead. Actual Results: Non-starting system. udev is needed to mount / Gives error: init_udevd_socket: error getting socket: Address family not supported Expected Results: System starting ok Might want to be Major, as anyone installing through online docs will encounter this.
