One of the first steps that should be recommended to the user during the install process should be to execute the following command: # emerge mirrorselect && mirrorselect -a -s4 As expected, this can severely increase the download speed of the sources for most people who are running on a broadband connection. It will also heavily reduce the load on the master server. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
mirror select is marked stable, so I will look into adding this..
You said you'll look, so I'm making you the bug owner :)
ive mentioned about this several times in the past how i would love for this to be incorporated. i have even modified the code for mirrorselect in other bugs :) although it requires dependancies not recommended to be installed until stage3. but this time its a little late. ideally it should (i can do this) output a verbose mirrorlist, and be packaged upoin the livecd. so those who - before chrooting, care to speed up their mirrors. can pick a list and echo it into the make.conf ie: mirrorselect -c -s5 >> /mnt/gentoo.etc/make.conf if you would like me to make code changes, and can arrange this with LiveWire/pfeifer, im more than happy to.
assign it to me if you feel youd like me to handle it :)
please see bug #20076 contains an updated mirrorselect. im planning to re-write mirrorselect into python shortly, so it makes sure its nice and tidy - but for now this works :)
well, if it flies by docs-review, I say it is a go. johnm, would you like to mail gentoo-docs-review@gentoo.org for approval?
Moving, since I no longer really do docs.
This is already implemented now.
