+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #137207 +++ # emerge -av mutt [ebuild N ] mail-client/mutt-1.5.15-r2 USE="crypt gdbm gnutls gpgme imap mbox nntp pop sasl smime smtp ssl -berkdb -debug -idn -nls -qdbm -vanilla" [...] * checking 94 files for package collisions existing file /usr/share/man/man5/mbox.5.bz2 is not owned by this package [...] package mail-client/mutt-1.5.15-r2 NOT merged # qfile /usr/share/man/man5/mbox.5.bz2 mail-mta/netqmail (/usr/share/man/man5/mbox.5.bz2) Both man pages document the mbox file format, but are different. According to http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=137207#c17 netqmail has some man page handling cleanup pending anyway, so maybe this can be resolved there.

To work around the problem I selectively emerged and un-emerged both mutt and netqmail and renamed the bz file in the man directory that threw the error... the result is consistent... if mutt is the first package on the system, netqmail will install fine... and vice versa if netqmail is the first package on the system mutt will install.... the bz file coming from netqmail seems corrupt because if it comes from that package man mbox looks like garbeled junk.
I would like to add some more things. Detected file collision(s): * * /usr/share/man/man3/error.3.bz2 * /usr/share/man/man1/maildirmake.1.bz2 * /usr/share/man/man5/mbox.5.bz2 * * Searching all installed packages for file collisions... * * Press Ctrl-C to Stop * * mail-client/mutt-1.5.16 * /usr/share/man/man5/mbox.5.bz2 * * net-mail/courier-imap-4.0.6-r3 * /usr/share/man/man1/maildirmake.1.bz2 * * sys-apps/man-pages-3.20 * /usr/share/man/man3/error.3.bz2
From Mutt's point of view, we could rename mbox.5 to mutt-mbox.5 or something. Alternatively, since Mutt is a MUA, we can just rm it from Mutt. It's more an MTA thing, I guess.

It's more an > MTA thing, I guess. I'd nuke mutt's version of the file, I'd expect MTA admins being more interested in the format than MUA users. Aside from that, there's always Google. One could even take the POV that neither MTA nor MUA should come with such a manpage - arguably, only an MDA needs to know about it, but that's nitpicking.
mutt-1.5.20-r8 (which is about to get stabilised) no longer installs both mmdf.5 and mbox.5 manpages
This happens with stable amd64: * Detected file collision(s): * * /usr/share/man/man3/error.3.bz2 * * Searching all installed packages for file collisions... * * Press Ctrl-C to Stop * * sys-apps/man-pages-3.22 * /usr/share/man/man3/error.3.bz2 * * Package 'mail-mta/netqmail-1.05-r8' NOT merged due to file collisions. * If necessary, refer to your elog messages for the whole content of the * above message. >>> Failed to install mail-mta/netqmail-1.05-r8, Log file:
