I got grub to emerge again by editing the ebuild ...

remove: 

WANT_AUTOCONF="latest"
WANT_AUTOMAKE="latest"

and then change:  

DEPEND=">=sys-libs/ncurses-5.2-r5

to
RDEPEND=">=sys-libs/ncurses-5.2-r5"
DEPEND="${RDEPEND}
        =sys-devel/automake-1.9*
        >=sys-devel/autoconf-2.5"



now it emerges again no plm
