If it helps, this broke in a recent portage sync. Before syncing, I got

 * Done with patching
 * Running eautoreconf in '/var/tmp/portage/sys-boot/grub-0.97-r3/work/grub-0.97' ...
 * Requested autoconf 2.5
 * Using autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.61
 * Using autoheader (GNU Autoconf) 2.61
 * Requested automake 1.9
 * Using automake (GNU automake) 1.9.6
 * Using aclocal (GNU automake) 1.9.6

After syncing today (without merging any updates):

 * Done with patching
 * Running eautoreconf in '/var/tmp/portage/sys-boot/grub-0.97-r3/work/grub-0.97' ...
 * Requested autoconf 2.5
 * Using autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.61
 * Using autoheader (GNU Autoconf) 2.61
 * Requested automake latest: 1.10
 * Using automake (GNU automake) 1.10
 * Using aclocal (GNU automake) 1.10

Ahh, the patch that caused the problem:

Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2006-11-28 21:21:19 UTC
to phrase it more correctly, the change that triggered a bug in the grub autotool code is ...
Comment 5 Mike Doty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-11-30 10:03:15 UTC
happens on amd64 too
Comment 6 James Laver 2006-12-02 08:27:02 UTC
Reproduced here. Downgrading automake worked perfectly.

Best regards,
