Description Dennis Schridde 2006-11-11 10:03:46 UTC
It would be nice if the x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.9626 ebuild would make it's way back into Portage till the 9xxx legacy driver is released.
OpenGL is segfaulting with 9629 on NV2x chips.

No. Both 9625 and 9629 were BETA drivers that were added to assist NVIDIA in fixing them before they released the latest stable release. We have no intentions on being stuck supporting drivers that had known issues for many users.
Comment 2 Dennis Schridde 2006-11-13 08:08:41 UTC
I know they are beta... But currently they are the only 9xxx drivers which work on my card.
There would have been to option to package- and keywordmask them, but ok... There is always the overlay for me.

Do you realize that by removing this driver, you are dropping AIGLX support for all nv2x cards? This cripples my machine at home (nv28), and my machine at work (nv25gl). Can you at least leave in this driver until nvidia releases a fix for the 9629 problem?

by that logic you can remove 9629 as well and leave everyone out in the cold.

Putting 9626 back in would not bring back issues for other users on ~arch since they would get 9629 unless , as an NV2 user they needed to mask it and drop back to 9626.

That would seem very simple, clean and a good option for all nv users.

A lot more sensible than obliging nv2 users to start grubbing around in the attic on CVS archive to install 9626 in an overlay.

It has cost me a lot of effort to trace the problem , find a suitable alternative and piece it all together.

Had there been a working alternative in portage it would have taken 5 minutes to mask the version causing segfaults and portage would have given me what was needed.

This is the sort of thing portage ( or any distros packages management system) is supposed to handle, not to leave individual users to sort out the mess.

Please rectify this situation, the solution is very simple and would work for all.

Thanks.
