Out of memory, most likely.

Comment 3 Kamil Gornik 2006-10-24 09:48:05 UTC
I have just found out what happened to my box. Error was exactly the same.
I have 702MB RAM, and on previous disc (which failed completely recently) all compiled fine.
On partition where /var/tmp/portage resides must be about 5GB free disc space. And I was. But on my new disc something went badly.

Reason was quite simple: I forgot to set swap in /etc/fstab after installation.
Having less than 1GB RAM/swap seems tobe much too little to compile openoffice-2.x family.
