The supplied file used in /etc/nanorc, and packaged in /usr/share/doc/nano-1.3.10-r1/nanorc.sample.gz for ~/.nanorc contains obsolete commands (e.g. set brackets, set punctuation). When uncommented these cause error messages to appear when executing nano. These commands are also documented in the nanorc manpage, despite not appearing to be valid. The current manpage of nanorc (though it looks a bit old) can be found at http://www.nano-editor.org/dist/v1.2/nanorc.5.html .
