To reproduce problem:

emerge nano
edit /etc/nanorc and uncomment 'set brackets'.

Error message received:

Error in /etc/nanorc on line 27: Unknown flag brackets

Press Enter to continue starting nano

Please consider adding a comment above the option (in /etc/nanorc) notifying users that if they wish to use the 'set brackets' option, they must emerge nano with the 'justify' USE flag.

i wont bother tweaking the current docs since this is a minor thing ;)
