I am emerge man-pages-ru. Then I try to see that is 'cp': man cp. I see broken page (with invalid encoding). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. setup You system with unicode support (locales, fonts (terminus), LANG) 2. # emerge man-pages-ru 3. $ LANG="ru_RU.utf8" man cp Actual Results: Unredable page. :( Expected Results: Redable page. :) All other programms (for example mc) looks as need. I try to encode these man pages to the utf8, but result is unsuccessfull - I can see this page only in unformatted kind.

I determine that problem is in the one of groff, nroff, troff parts of the man package. For example RH in here FC3 & FC4 use man-1.5p with unicode patch which adds convertion of KOI8-R to UTF-8 and some other (for other languages) into the sources of man package.
being a little less vague would be helpful what patch ? Fedora's man-1.6b contains a man-1.6b-i18n_nroff.patch ...
You are right. I write about man-1.5m2-i18n_nroff.patch. I don't know about man- 1.6b-i18n_nroff.patch, because I don't have access to the related package... But I try to search it in the Internet and apply to the man-1.6a...
I try to find man-1.6b-i18n_nroff.patch. But I can't. I try both google and yahoo. Also I check Fedora's repository (http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/ fedora/linux/) for man-1.6*.src.rpm. Result - nothing. Can You publish url to this patch?

Thank's. I find another way to fix this bug. And it 100% working (I check): In file /etc/man.conf need to replace line with NROFF definition by (for russian): NROFF /usr/bin/nroff -Tlatin1 -c -mandoc |iconv -f KOI8-R This fix (iconv) may be easy included to the /usr/bin/nroff because it is script. I try to do it later.
man-1.6b-i18n_nroff.patch is incompatible with man-1.5m-groff-1.18.patch and have no effect without special modification of nroff (from groff package) as in Fedora Core. Is it need to do?
Created attachment 72830 [details] new nroff version which fixes problems with russian man pages on unicode boxes I try to modify nroff (base version I extract from groff-1.19.2). I don't want create ebuild or patch for groff at this time because changes are very wet. Any who have problems with charmap of man pages may add to this file two lines: <language>) in_locale=<man pages charmap> ;; where <language> is output of "locale language" and <man pages charmap> - char map of man pages. To determine it's need few experiments with iconv... Also in the /etc/man.conf it's need to add to the line with NROFF definition parameter --manpage: NROFF /usr/bin/nroff -Tlatin1 -mandoc --manpage This version of nroff ignores all -T options if --manpage present.
