Description Sylvain Alain (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-08-29 05:07:22 UTC
Since I updated to gdm 2.8.0.1-r1, the text action, session and Language , the
font is much bigger then usual, and also, the loggin message bienvenue is
bigger also.

In fact, the bigger effect is also present in the area where the date and time
appear in the lower right of my screen.

I use Emergence for my login theme.

I also used the default login screen with the flower and I have the same
effect.

I never had this problem.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.boot the computer and start gdm.
2.That's it
3.

Actual Results:
Same result

Expected Results:
The font would be as usual, so a normal size caracters.

NOT a bugzilla product bug. All the ebuild-related bugs go to Gentoo Linux, as
clearly stated in the instructions.

is this still a problem with 2.8.0.3 ?
Comment 3 Wiktor Wandachowicz 2005-10-01 03:41:43 UTC
New upgrades in the evening, new bug reports in the morning...

Yes, the newest stable gdm-2.8.0.3 still has the same problem with Gentoo
Emergence theme. Fonts are so big that the text goes over the right side of the
screen.

I've noticed that behaviour with the previous gdm upgrade, but I'm not
completely sure if it was the only reason - as at the same time there was X.org
upgrade available. So I did them both. Now it's gdm-2.8.0.3 and the problem
stays the same.

I managed myself to correct this, by manually editing the file:
/usr/share/gdm/themes/gentoo-emergence/gentoo-emergence.xml
and changing the font sizes from "Sans 14" to "Sans 12".
But it seems to me that it heals the symptoms and not the illness.

And while we're at the gentoo-emergence gdm theme...

There is a slight problem with Polish translation of this theme. I already
described it in the Bug #96585. Essentialy, there are two commands on the screen
(Session and System -- in Polish: Sesja and Systemowe), which have the same
keyboard shortcut - Alt+S. This makes it IMPOSSIBLE at all to use this shortcut
to activate any of the commands. Only a sad "beep" comes from the machine... :-(

With the upgrade of the package it's fairly easy to change ONE text string in
the gentoo-emergence.xml file. I already described what's wrong, how to correct
it and even made a patch. But the Great Maintainer said: WONTFIX. Probably he
just knows better ;-)

By the way, I updated my once created .diff file for the above issue, and now it
includes my attempt to resolve both problems. Maybe this time it will help?

gentoo-emergence.xml.diff

Patch that changes the font sizes from "Sans 14" to "Sans 12" in the
gentoo-emergence.xml, in order to make the text fit on the screen.

It also changes ONE text in Polish translation to avoid duplication of the
keyboard shortcuts.

Sorry for the fourth post in a row, but both the above problems became
troublesome to me recently. And I feel like I have to defend my position.

Even if gdm's themes are "broken beyond repair", like foser was kind to notice,
nothing happens to these themes. So, why not apply one of my patches, if it
would ease the life of Gentoo + Gnome + gdm users?

Please reconsider. Thanks!

i dont know if it is linked, but since i emerged gdm 2.8.0.3, the fonts were ok
in gdm (i have a 1600x1200 screen resolution) but when it starts fluxbox, all
the fonts are much smaller than before.

I report it here but maybe there is no longer, we never know :]
Comment 8 Wiktor Wandachowicz 2006-01-05 14:04:10 UTC
Two days ago I've updated my system to gnome-2.12, and gdm-2.8.0.7.
The "fonts are too big" problem has not been solved (still).

It's been half of a year and nothing has been done to the gdm themes...

If the maintainers are unable to resolve the situation, they should call
for help. I'm positively sure that the translations would be "repaired"
quite quickly (a month maybe?). Just tell us what the real problem is,
what should be done, and it will be done.

I'll post an updated patch for gdm-2.8.0.7. Maybe you can use it?

gentoo-emergence.xml-2.8.0.7.diff

An updated patch for gdm-2.8.0.7 which resolves the "big login font" issue
for "emergence" theme.

Keep in mind that I tested it only for "pl_PL" locale, on the screen
with 1024x768 resolution.
