Yeah, that's the problem. I've got Gentoo 1.2 and I installed gdm. Always I type my user in the box (doesn't matter the user, edulix, root... no one!) appears a small window that says "Authentication failed". ¿What's the matter? NOTE: There is only a box, where I type the user. I guess that if the authentication was not failing will appear a box where I'll type my pasword. A Gentoo user from Spain! Let me get this straight : you can only type a user and never get to type a password ? First thing to try is ofcourse re-emerge gdm and lower down on optimisations. Probably a pam problem, see bug http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9389 .
