However upstream development seems to have come to a halt a couple of years ago.
Yeah I'm not sure if it is feasible to continue to package this considering the upstream situation. sci-visualization/labplot is a decent alternative, but unfortunately is not (yet) on the same level feature wise.
What is missing and do you see work on that, in labplot?

Last I checked 3D plotting was still on the labplot wishlist, not sure if any progress was made in this area. Regardless, I don't think this is an important enough reason to keep a dead package around.
