Created attachment 897831 [details] build.log This was inspired by a report in #gentoo and I decided to look into it a bit myself given I could reproduce. For me, this fails to build: ``` $ CFLAGS="-O2" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1" USE="-* abi_x86_64 amd64 elibc_glibc jpeg kernel_linux motif22-compatibility png unicode xft" CC=clang CXX=clang++ ebuild motif-2.3.8-r5.ebuild clean compile ``` I'll post analysis in a followup comment now, it's pretty weird so far. ``` * abi_x86_64.amd64: running multilib-minimal_abi_src_compile make -j32 -l32 -C 2) It fails with mismatched flex/reflex which provides the missing main(); 3) The situation is made worse if flex or reflex was built with LTO because of bug 926120?
so, TL;DR: * do what I mention in 1) in https://bugs.gentoo.org/936172#c1 to avoid mismatched flex; * can you reproduce with clang but not using LTO? (note that i'm not using LTO for motif here) I might be making some logical jump as it's a bit late, so if it doesn't make sense, I'll revisit tomorrow. Thanks!
I cannot reproduce the problem, neither with gcc nor with clang. "undefined symbol: main" usually indicates that sys-devel/flex was compiled with a different compiler/toolchain or with different CFLAGS. This pretty much looks like a duplicate of bug 592868. Again, bug 592868 comment #6, i.e. try adding -ffat-lto-objects to flex compilation flags as suggested there.

I'm saying "-lfl" isn't right if configure picks up LEX=reflex. i.e. you either need to make LIBS=... pick the right value for LEX, or just unset LEX / force it to be flex so it matches.
The bug has been referenced in the following commit(s): https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/commit/?id=fa118a9c6e00e026170807f7b67415e6ba68967f commit fa118a9c6e00e026170807f7b67415e6ba68967f Author: Ulrich Müller <ulm@gentoo.org> AuthorDate: 2024-07-17 05:36:54 +0000 Commit: Ulrich Müller <ulm@gentoo.org> CommitDate: 2024-07-17 05:38:21 +0000 x11-libs/motif: Try to make linking with libfl.a less brittle Bug: https://bugs.gentoo.org/936172 Signed-off-by: Ulrich Müller <ulm@gentoo.org> x11-libs/motif/motif-2.3.8-r6.ebuild | 124 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1 file changed, 124 insertions(+)
Thanks! That indeed covers it. The remaining issue is just the LTO static libs thing which is to be handled separately outside of motif.
