Crossdev creates a make.conf file with ROOT="/usr/${CHOST}/". So far, so good. But some packages like media-fonts/encodings or media-fonts/font-alias install some files (not all) into /usr/CHOST/usr/CHOST instead of /usr/CHOST. This happens if font-util is installed, first.
Example (reproduced in Docker, but can be reproduced without it): 1. docker pull gentoo/stage3 2. docker tag gentoo/stage3:latest gentoo/stage3:2021-09 3. docker rmi gentoo/stage3:latest 4. docker run --name $USER.gentoo-session -w /root -tiv /var/db/repos/gentoo:/var/db/repos/gentoo -v $PWD:/mnt gentoo/stage3:2021-09 5. mkdir -p /etc/portage/repos.conf 6. cat >/etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf <<EOF [DEFAULT] main-repo = gentoo [gentoo] location = /var/db/repos/gentoo sync-type = rsync sync-uri = rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage auto-sync = yes sync-rsync-verify-jobs = 1 sync-rsync-verify-metamanifest = yes sync-rsync-verify-max-age = 24 sync-openpgp-key-path = /usr/share/openpgp-keys/gentoo-release.asc sync-openpgp-key-refresh-retry-count = 40 sync-openpgp-key-refresh-retry-overall-timeout = 1200 sync-openpgp-key-refresh-retry-delay-exp-base = 2 sync-openpgp-key-refresh-retry-delay-max = 60 sync-openpgp-key-refresh-retry-delay-mult = 4 priority = 20 EOF 7. chmod 0644 /etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf 8. emerge -v crossdev 9. mkdir -p /var/db/repos/private-overlay/{profiles,metadata} 10. echo "private-overlay" >/var/db/repos/private-overlay/profiles/repo_name 11. echo "masters = gentoo" >/var/db/repos/private-overlay/metadata/layout.conf 12. echo "thin-manifests = true" >>/var/db/repos/private-overlay/metadata/layout.conf 13. chown -R portage:portage /var/db/repos/private-overlay/{profiles,metadata} 14. echo "[private-overlay]" >/etc/portage/repos.conf/private.conf 15. echo "location = /var/db/repos/private-overlay" >>/etc/portage/repos.conf/private.conf 16. echo "priority = 10" >>/etc/portage/repos.conf/private.conf 17. echo "masters = gentoo" >>/etc/portage/repos.conf/private.conf 18. echo "auto-sync = no" >>/etc/portage/repos.conf/private.conf 19. export CT=arm-unknown-linux-gnueabi 20. crossdev --stable -oS gentoo -oO /var/db/repos/private-overlay --target $CT Installing font-util causes the problem: 21. $CT-emerge -av font-util 22. $CT-emerge -av encodings

For encodings this seems to be where this goes wrong: Checking for root directory for font files... /usr/aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu/usr/share/fonts # if --with-fontrootdir not specified... if test "x${FONTROOTDIR}" = "x"; then FONTROOTDIR=`$PKG_CONFIG --variable=fontrootdir fontutil` fi # ...and if pkg-config didn't find fontdir in fontutil.pc... if test "x${FONTROOTDIR}" = "x"; then FONTROOTDIR="${datadir}/fonts/X11" fi With font-util in EROOT: $ aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu-pkg-config --variable=fontrootdir fontutil /usr/aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu/usr/share/fonts $ PKG_CONFIG_SYSROOT_DIR=/dummy aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu-pkg-config --variable=fontrootdir fontutil /usr/share/fonts That's not in the .pc file itself, pkg-config is adding SYSROOT. This isn't necessarily wrong (aka SYSROOT used for building, need to find files at build time), but when looking for install paths or runtime paths through variables that's not going to work. Which leaves me with no idea what would be a "proper" fix to this given we don't know what the pkg-config variables are used for.
(In reply to Ionen Wolkens from comment #5) > Which leaves me with no idea what would be a "proper" fix to this given we > don't know what the pkg-config variables are used for. I reached the same conclusion. I think we will just have to apply fixes based on how the variables are used in context, as I did in bug 815520.
Sorry, I meant to reference bug 813639.
Perhaps xorg-3.eclass should be adjusted to pass --with-fontrootdir to configure.

For installation paths, we don't want SYSROOT prepended. Passing --with-fontrootdir bypasses the pkg-config call and avoids the problem with SYSROOT.
