Description Sophie Hamilton 2019-10-19 00:08:54 UTC
Hello,

Unfortunately I don't have the specific error or build log for this as the first thing I did was to attempt to replicate it and I couldn't. That said, one of my emerge runs failed when emerging games-action/armagetronad-0.2.8.3.3-r1 while running a /usr/bin/install command.

Unfortunately I forget which file this was on, but I remember the output looking very similar to the build log on bug #330705, which was marked as 'fixed' in 2010 ( https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo/historical.git/commit/games-action/armagetronad?id=7c06a30211d71e0d95013792e63761590fa3628c , though this was reverted a month later as it broke languages: https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo/historical.git/commit/games-action/armagetronad?id=b774a08ec9b0ead6b41c3d985afcb1aae1f8dad2) before the game was dropped from the Portage tree in 2011, and 0.2.8.3.2 was re-added to the tree in 2013 (bug #481516).

The new ebuild used -j1 on its "emake install" command, presumably in an attempt to mitigate the parallel install installs of the dropped ebuild without the language issues, but this was removed in bug #588104 after extensive testing and no parallel install issues being found.

However, I seem to have just encountered one again, hence me opening this bug. I apologise so much that I don't have a build log to give; this is my first time seeing a "File exists" error and I didn't consider that it might be due to a race condition that would disappear on a retry, hence I didn't think to save the log when debugging and subsequently being surprised when it worked okay. I hope the work that went into researching the history of this bug suffices.

Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge armagetronad

(actual emerge on which this failed was a "emerge --changed-deps y -auDN @world" command, but I doubt that that matters too much in this case)
Actual Results:
A /usr/bin/install command failed with the error "File exists".

Expected Results:
The software should have (and did, in subsequent tests) install correctly.

Comment 1 Sophie Hamilton 2019-10-19 00:25:28 UTC
Quick typo fix:

> presumably in an attempt to mitigate the parallel install installs of the dropped ebuild

This was meant to say "an attempt to mitigate the parallel install issues of the dropped ebuild". My apologies.
Comment 2 Sophie Hamilton 2019-10-19 00:27:38 UTC
Also, note that even though I say "parallel install", this bug has nothing to do with FEATURES="parallel-install", which I do not have in my make.conf.

build.log

I have managed to reproduce the build error using "ebuild armagetronad-0.2.8.3.3-r1.ebuild clean install" until I got the error. Please find attached the build log!

games-action/armagetronad: restore -j1, fix dedicated, tidy

j1 was removed for bug #588104, but turns out still needed for
install until proper fix (bug #698020).

No longer attempt to remove desktop/ when USE=dedicated (bug #716442).
