Based on repo hash the version of ninja seems to be ninja-1.8.2-r2, is that correct?
Cannot reproduce, I've built kicad-5.0.1 with multiple USE flag combinations successfully. Please attach full build log and USE flags used on kicad.

Still cannot reproduce. Are you running a mix of stable and testing ebuilds? Did you do revdep-rebuild, etc? Maybe also rebuild ninja.

Sorry, I've been very distracted lately. I think I tried rebuilding ninja and other build dependencies before, but will try again and try to look at other parts of my particular setup that could possibly have an effect.
I've managed to reproduce this, ironically only on 5.1.5. Related upstream bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/kicad/+bug/1789468 It seems I will have to backport the patch.
