What exactly happens - does the screen stay black, does it start and crash, is there anything in the Xorg log etc.?

Could you please also attach emerge --info?
Comment 2 DJ Dunn 2018-03-15 07:59:32 UTC
it doesn't really do anything i go and start the xdm service via openrc which runs sddm, and i get the error that I posted in the sddm logs

i see service starting, service started and thats it, no x logs just those four lines in sddm logs.

Could you test the patch from bug 644718?
Comment 5 DJ Dunn 2018-03-22 03:32:07 UTC
plugged the patch in and it seems to start up correctly right away with sddm-0.17.0-r1

I'm having the same problem with the version 0.18.0 of x11-misc/sddm and I do not have this problem with the version 0.15.0 of x11-misc/sddm.
