after i updated xorg to version xorg-x11-6.8.2-r2 i wasnt able to start gdm any more. My nvidia-kernel version was: 1.0.6629-r4 Fix: After i changed the driver from "nvidia" to "nv" in the xorg.conf i was able to start X. So i emerged the ~x86 version of nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx (1.0.7667) and it works fine even with "nvidia" as driver. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.emerge xorg-x11-6.8.2-r2 2./etc/init.d/xdm restart (with gdm as displaymanager) 3. Actual Results: lots of errormessages like this (all of them nvidia-symbols): " [...] Symbol xxx from module yyy is unresolved! Fatal server error: Some required symbols were unresolved" # emerge info Portage 2.0.51.22-r1 (default-linux/x86/2005.0, gcc-3.3.5-20050130, glibc-2.3.4. 20041102-r1, 2.6.12-gentoo-r4fnord i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.12-gentoo-r4fnord i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3000+ Gentoo Base System version 1.6.12 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.10 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.5 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r10 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.18-r1 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.8.1-r1, 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/ share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3.4/env /usr/kde/3.4/share/config / usr/kde/3.4/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib/mozilla/ defaults/pref /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://ftp.linux.ee/pub/gentoo/distfiles/" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="3dnow 3dnowext 7zip X aalib acl acpi alsa apache2 apm arts audiofile avi bash-completion berkdb bidi bitmap-fonts bzlib cairo cdr crypt curl dga directfb divx4linux dlloader elf emboss encode esd ethereal fam fbcon flac font-server foomaticdb fortran ftp gbdm gdbm geoip gif glitz gnome gpm gtk gtk2 gtkhtml guile hal imagemagick imlib jpeg jpeg2k kde libg++ libwww lzo mad maildir mikmod mime mmx mmxext motif mozilla mp3 mpeg mppe-mppc mysql ncurses network nls nocd nptl nvidia offensive ogg oggvorbis opengl oss pam pcre pdflib perl php png prelude python qt quicktime readline real rtc samba sasl sdl slang smux snmp sockets speex spell sse sse2 ssl stream svga tcltk tcpd tga tiff toolbar truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts unicode usb vcd vhosts videos vlm vorbis win32codecs wmf x86 xine xml xml2 xmms xrandr xv xvid xvmc zlib userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, MAKEOPTS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY

Try removing "dlloader" from your USE flags; per http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/hardened/hardenedxorg.xml?style=printable dlloader does not work with the binary Nvidia or ATI drivers. I had the same problem (referring to unresolved symbols in nvidia_drv.o) when I emerged xorg-x11-6.8.2-r2 with dlloader turned on. Removing that flag allowed X to work normally. $ emerge info Portage 2.0.51.22-r1 (default-linux/amd64/2005.0, gcc-3.4.3, glibc-2.3.5-r0, 2.6.11-gentoo-r11-20050716A x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.11-gentoo-r11-20050716A x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ Gentoo Base System version 1.6.12 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.10 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.5 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r10 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.18-r1 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=k8 -pipe -O2" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/env /usr/kde/3.4/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/init.d /etc/pam.d /etc/sound/events /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=k8 -pipe -O2" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo http://distfiles.gentoo.org" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="amd64 X alsa apm arts avi berkdb bitmap-fonts cdr crypt cups curl doc eds encode esd fam font-server foomaticdb fortran gd gdbm gif gnome gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 imlib jpeg kde ldap libg++ libwww lm_sensors lzw lzw-tiff mad mikmod motif mp3 mpeg ncurses nls nvidia ogg oggvorbis opengl pam pam_chroot pam_console pam_timestamp pdflib perl png pwdb python qt quicktime readline ruby sdl spell ssl tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts usb userlocales vorbis xine xml2 xmms xpm xprint xv zlib userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY
(In reply to comment #2) > Try removing "dlloader" from your USE flags; You were right, Mitch I removed the dlloader flag and emerged xorg and the stable nvidia-kernel again. Now its working fine thanks
Marking RESOLVED INVALID as this was a configuration issue.
