Install openoffice-bin: [ebuild R ] app-office/openoffice-bin-1.9.104 +gnome +java +kde 0 kB you will notice that it takes a long time to load when you start openoffice. I think this is because it can't find the java jre. If you go to Options -> tools -> openoffice -> java , you will again see that the window becomes "frozen" for a minute or two, it is again trying to autodetect the java jre. It will give you the option to add a jre. I tried /opt/sun-jre-bin-1.5.0.03 , /opt/blackdown-jre-1.4.2.01 , and /opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.01 but openoffice keeps saying that it couldn't find a valid JRE. I also tried the lib and bin directories of all of those but no luck. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: See above. Actual Results: openoffice doesn't detect the jre Expected Results: openoffice should detect the jre
