Description Christopher Head 2025-03-07 23:16:22 UTC
The ebuild for pavucontrol depends on libcanberra conditionally on USE=X. However, that information is never passed to the pavucontrol build system; instead, the build system autodetects whether libcanberra is present or not, and thus will end up linking to it even if USE=-X. This results in an @preserved-rebuild prompt if one unmerges libcanberra.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Emerge pavucontrol with USE=X
2. Remerge pavucontrol with USE=-X
3. Unmerge libcanberra and libcanberra-gtk3
Actual Results:
No @preserved-rebuild prompt, pavucontrol binary not linked to libcanberra.so

Expected Results:
@preserved-rebuild prompt, pavucontrol binary still linked to libcanberra.so

media-sound/pavucontrol-6.1::gentoo was built with the following:
USE="-X" ABI_X86="(64)"
Comment 1 Alfred Wingate 2025-03-10 08:47:54 UTC
Im inclined to make it unconditional (libcanberra-gtk3 isn't required but libcanberra is). So from a no X perspective this won't block disabling X elsewhere.
Comment 2 Christopher Head 2025-03-10 17:34:13 UTC
It’s not really required in the sense of “program doesn’t work without it”. I’m running without it right now (I built with USE=-X, then preserved-rebuilt after unmerging), and pavucontrol still works fine. I actually don’t know exactly what it added; “system sounds” is still a controllable volume knob even without it.

Sorry, “it” referring to libcanberra (not -gtk3). I currently don’t have it on this box, and pavucontrol is fine.

Make libcanberra an option (not upstreamable as is)

I'm now considering just disabling it. I'm not sure if its something about my environment or if the feature is broken. I think there is supposed to be a notification sound when the audio level changes?
Comment 5 Christopher Head 2025-03-10 18:38:24 UTC
It looks like there is code in src/sinkwidget.cc that plays a sound of some sort via libcanberra when you change the volume of a sink, if libcanberra is enabled. Not actually sure if it works or not, but the code is there, trying.
Comment 6 Alfred Wingate 2025-03-10 18:41:54 UTC
I've now found the difference. Its *very* minor. When you change the volume for a sink in "Output Devices" (not any other volume!) it makes a sound.
