Please run "perf test" as root. It's not required that all tests pass, but please report here the ones which fail, if any. For example, the following test fails for me:

gentoo ~ # perf test -v 92

 92: probe libc's inet_pton & backtrace it with ping                 : FAILED!

Their expected regular expression doesn't work in Gentoo, but the probe actually worked. A few other tests may also fail depending on your kernel configuration and if packages have debugging info or not, but it doesn't necessarily mean that perf is broken.
