2.4.2-r3 was stabilized for x86 but there is no other stable ebuild for x86. see https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/media-sound/audacity
I believe it was worded as "last rite request" because audacity-3 had the controversies with it, so it might make sense to notify to users via a package.mask entry that the pre Muse Group versions are going away. Some users might have intentionally kept it back on 2.4 through some means on their systems, etc. With my wxWidgets hat on, wxGTK-3.0 needs to go away eventually and this is one blocker for that. I'm not actively working towards that in the next months yet, however.
